The technique of "iroe" (colored painting), which was developed about 30 years after the birth of Arita ware, brought color to the world of Arita ware, which had previously been dominated by white and indigo. One of the most representative patterns of this colored painting is the "plum and chrysanthemum design." While leaving space on the white base, the auspicious design of plum and chrysanthemum is expressed in vivid colors in an intricate manner. The model design was a symmetrical one, thought to have been produced for export, at a time when asymmetrical compositions were common. It is a pattern that still exudes freshness today.
