Traditional Craftsman: Musashiya Toyoyama
Yoshio Noguchi Oshie Hozonata developed alongside the rise of Kabuki in the Edo period, and hozonata depicting Kabuki actors on stage became extremely popular. Even today, designs featuring Kabuki and Japanese dance remain popular. I devote myself to my craft every day, striving to capture the vivid atmosphere of the stage as vividly as possible within the limited form of the hagoita.
A hallmark of Toyoyama’s work is the design that allows the characters’ dances and gestures to be instantly recognizable, all while staying within the boundaries of the board—which flares outward from the handle toward the top.
The natural expressions, which take the characters’ skeletal structure into account, seem as though they might come to life at any moment.
