A mysterious artist who was active for ten months starting in May of the 6th year of the Kansei era before vanishing. He is famous for his portraits, which sought to capture the true faces of actors. This piece depicts a scene from *Koibito-bō: Somewate Tsunagi*, and the gesture—as if about to pounce on his opponent—and the spiteful expression are superb.

Toyoo Noguchi Oshie Hozobata developed alongside the rise of Kabuki theater during the Edo period, and hozobata depicting Kabuki actors on stage became extremely popular. Even today, pieces featuring themes from Kabuki and Japanese dance continue to sell well. I dedicate myself to my craft every day, striving to capture the vivid atmosphere of the stage as brilliantly as possible within the limited form of the hozobata.
A hallmark of Toyoyama’s work is the design that allows the characters’ dances and gestures to be instantly recognizable without extending beyond the board’s flared shape—which widens from the handle toward the top.
The natural expressions, which take the characters’ skeletal structure into account, seem as if they might come to life at any moment
