Since ancient times, ukiyo-e has been a part of popular culture, cherished and admired by people who would pick them up and gaze at them.
Hagoita are similarly unique Japanese art objects meant to be kept close at hand and enjoyed. We have created these appliqué pieces featuring the works of Sharaku and Utamaro, the most popular artists of the Edo period.
Sharaku was a mysterious artist who was active for ten months starting in May of the 6th year of the Kansei era before vanishing without a trace.
He is famous for his portraits that sought to capture the true faces of actors. This piece depicts the 5th generation Ichikawa Danjuro during his time as Ebizo.

Traditional Craftsman: Musashiya Toyoyama
Yoshio Noguchi Oshie Hozonata developed alongside the rise of Kabuki in the Edo period, and hozonata depicting Kabuki actors on stage became extremely popular. Even today, designs featuring Kabuki and Japanese dance remain popular. I devote myself to my craft every day, striving to capture the vivid atmosphere of the stage as vividly as possible within the limited form of the hagoita.
A hallmark of Toyoyama’s work is the design that allows the characters’ dances and gestures to be instantly recognizable, all while staying within the boundaries of the board—which flares outward from the handle toward the top.
The natural expressions, which take the characters’ skeletal structure into account, seem as though they might come to life at any moment.
